Carlsbad, California was buzzing with energy as builders, partners, and industry leaders gathered at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa for Build Smarter 2025. Three days filled with insightful keynotes, immersive learning, and moments of connection that reminded us why this industry thrives on resilience and innovation.

Big Ideas That Sparked Conversations

The general stage set the tone for the entire event. Chris Graham, President of Constellation HomeBuilder Systems, opened with a bold message: technological change isn’t on the horizon—it’s here. For homebuilders, adaptation isn’t optional; it’s urgent. His vision for the future centered on people, progress, and possibility, inspiring attendees to embrace change as an opportunity rather than a challenge.

Ali Wolf, Chief Economist at Zonda, brought clarity to a complex economic picture. Inflation, affordability pressures, and shifting housing dynamics have created uncertainty—but Ali’s forecast offered hope. While 2026 may be a “wait and see” year, 2027 promises renewed growth. Her advice? Use this time to reset, strengthen foundations, and prepare for the next boom.

Then came Kaihan Krippendorff, best-selling author and strategist, who challenged builders to “Outthink the Competition.” His framework for finding the “4th option”—the unexpected solution—underscored a powerful truth: creativity and strategic thinking are essential for thriving in a rapidly changing world.

From Vision to Practice

Beyond the big ideas, Build Smarter 2025 delivered in-depth learning across seven tracks and nearly 100 sessions. Builders explored strategies to streamline operations, elevate customer experiences, and strengthen vendor relationships.

One of the most talked-about solutions was NX. Sessions were spread across 2 full tracks, and offered a “day-in-the-life” journey through Constellation’s next-generation ERP for homebuilders. Launched into the market in February, NX is gaining momentum with exciting product developments and rapid builder adoption. This year’s sessions showcased how connected workflows can transform efficiency across sales, purchasing, production, accounting, and field operations. It wasn’t just a demo; it was a glimpse into the future of homebuilding technology.

At the same time, NEWSTAR and BuildTopia users deepened their expertise through collaborative community sessions and advanced training. Builders learned how to optimize processes, leverage integrations, and explore enhancements like our modern web portal for trades, and BuilderGo, the mobile app revolutionizing field collaboration.

Data was another star of the show. BuilderMetrix sessions revealed how analytics and AI can become a builder’s competitive advantage—helping predict market shifts, manage costs, and make smarter decisions. For those focused on customer experience, Homeowner Central and CustomerInsight demonstrated how digital tools and survey-driven insights can build loyalty and strengthen brands.

A Milestone for Professional Growth

This year’s conference also marked the debut of HomeBuilder Academy, Constellation’s new certification program. Designed to validate expertise in NEWSTAR, NX, and BuildTopia, the Academy offers structured learning paths and three certification levels—Associate, Professional, and Master. For builders, it’s more than training; it’s a way to accelerate productivity, reduce onboarding costs, and gain a competitive edge in hiring. As one attendee noted, “This isn’t just about systems—it’s about building confidence and capability across the industry.”

Innovation with Purpose: AI in Action

Technology was everywhere at Build Smarter 2025—but not for its own sake. Conversations around AI underscored a commitment to purposeful innovation, focused on delivering real value for builders rather than chasing trends.

A highlight was the session AI From Strategy to Action – Working Together, led by Jason Grovert, Senior Vice President of Technology Innovation at New Home Co., alongside Chris Graham. This dynamic discussion made AI approachable for homebuilders, blending strategic vision with practical steps. Jason and Chris explored how to kick-start AI initiatives with a focus on data hygiene, IP protection, and team engagement. Builders discovered the wonders of generative AI through real-world examples and learned why context, feedback loops, and continuous learning matter. The session closed with actionable tips for cultural shifts—because successful AI adoption isn’t just about technology; it’s about people.

Adding to the excitement, Seamus Mulroy, Product Manager in Constellation’s Data Services Group, showcased some of Constellation’s the latest AI-driven capabilities designed to help builders work smarter. From predictive insights to advanced analytics, Seamus demonstrated how AI can transform raw data into actionable intelligence—empowering builders to make faster, more informed decisions and stay ahead in a competitive market.

The takeaway? AI isn’t a buzzword here. It’s a practical tool for shaping the future of homebuilding, and Constellation is committed to integrating it with purpose.

Neighborhood-level Wildfire Resilience: KB Home Tour

Attendees also stepped outside the conference hall for a unique experience: a tour of KB Home’s Dixon Trail community, the nation’s first neighborhood to meet the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety’s Wildfire Prepared Neighborhood designation. This groundbreaking approach to resilience showcased how innovation extends beyond technology to community safety and sustainability. Builders saw firsthand how design standards can reduce wildfire risk—and even lower insurance costs dramatically.

Community, Connection, and a Little Fun

Build Smarter isn’t just about learning; it’s about connection. Starting with golf on La Costa’s stunning North Course to the Welcome Cocktail Reception, the event offered countless opportunities to network in a relaxed setting.

Tuesday night’s Builder Bash—a lively fiesta-filled evening —was a highlight, complete with dinner, entertainment, and plenty of laughter. Wellness activities like the 5K Fun Run and yoga sessions rounded out the experience, leaving attendees refreshed and energized. These moments reminded us that resilience starts with people—and that the best ideas often spark over shared experiences.

Looking Ahead

As builders navigate a challenging economic landscape, Build Smarter 2025 delivered a clear message: uncertainty is temporary, but preparation is permanent. By embracing innovation, investing in skills, and strengthening community, builders can position themselves for the next boom—and beyond.
